Even though you might not be able to find them in NYC anytime soon, CBD-infused cocktails have been popping up on menus all over the country as the non-psychoactive cannabinoid makes its way even further into the wellness zeitgeist. But just how safe is it to be mixing cannabidiol in with your favorite boozy beverage? Is there such a thing as being too chill?
Although fans believe that CBD can heal anything from anxiety to insomnia, the interaction between the cannabinoid and alcohol have not been thoroughly tested, so there isn’t really a definitive answer yet. From the limited studies and information available, there doesn’t seem to be any immediately evident adverse response to ingesting the two together. In fact, the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory features of CBD might even be beneficial to active drinkers.
Some animal studies have shown CBD to help protect against neurodegeneration caused by alcohol, and it might even shore up the liver’s defenses against oxidative stress caused by heavy alcohol consumption. Even with these promising studies, there’s no way to understand the long-term effects of CBD until more studies have been conducted over, well, the long term.
So safety is still a thumbs up with a question mark, but what about the physical effects? Does dumping a dose of CBD into your cocktail make you feel even groovier – yup, groovier – than usual?
No, not really. Even though CBD effects vary widely by person and dosage, most people won’t feel any noticeable difference between a couple of CBD-infused drinks and libations sans CBD. One small study noted almost no difference in experience between those imbibing alcohol with CBD and those going the traditional route.
As we wait for more research on the topic to sway us one way or another, we might just save the extra $5 (give or take) per drink and sip our cocktails sans CBD for a little bit longer. (Even if it does mean losing some hip points for now.)
